Manchester, New York
Manchester is a town in Ontario County, New York, USA. The population was 9,395 at the 2010 census. The town was named after one of its villages, which in turn was named after the original Manchester in England.
The Town of Manchester includes a village also named Manchester. The town is northeast of the city of Canandaigua.
== History ==
The town was first settled around 1793 near Clifton Springs. The Town was established as the "Town of Burt" (named after a legislator who sponsored the new town) from part of the Town of Farmington in 1821. In 1822, the name was changed to "Manchester".
Manchester has a strong place in the history of the Mormon religion, as it is believed to be the place where the prophet Joseph Smith discovered the golden plates which he used to produce the Book of Mormon. To commemorate this, an Angel Moroni statue is located on the hill Cumorah near NY-21.
